OpenStudy (kosonge):

–11 – (–15) subtract

OpenStudy (kosonge):

please help

OpenStudy (misty1212):

\[\huge -11-(-15)=-11+15\]

OpenStudy (misty1212):

or if you prefer, \(15-11\)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

do you understand what misty said ??

OpenStudy (kosonge):

sorta

OpenStudy (misty1212):

\[-(-a)=a\]so \[-(-15)=15\]

OpenStudy (misty1212):

or as the math teachers say "a minus a minus is a plus"

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

its just a matter of learning the rules for multiplying signs.. neg times neg = positive neg times positive = negative do not confuse these rules with adding/subtractions signs...those are different

OpenStudy (kosonge):

so -11- 15

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

when you have a neg with no number, outside of the parenthesis...like this -(-10)....it is the same as -1(-10)......so you are multiplying -1 * -10...and a neg times a neg is a positive...making -(-10) be +10 or just 10. This is just an example.
