Why did Parliament believe the colonists would accept the Tea Act of 1773? (Will Give A Medal.) A:Revenues raised by this act would go toward paying royal governors’ salaries. B:This act repealed the offensive Townshend Duties that taxed all imports. C:The revenues raised by this act would go toward the defense of the colonies. D:The colonial assemblies would collect the revenues raised by this act. E:This act substantially lowered the price of tea sold in the colonies (I'm Thinking B)

Can Anyone Help? D:

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I think the answer may be E, but I'm not completely sure. "The act retained the duty on imported tea at its existing rate, but, since the company was no longer required to pay an additional tax in England, the Tea Act effectively lowered the price of the East India Company’s tea in the colonies. If Parliament expected that the lowered cost of tea would mollify the colonists into acquiescing to the Tea Act, it was gravely mistaken. By allowing the East India Company to sell tea directly in the American colonies, the Tea Act cut out colonial merchants, and the prominent and influential colonial merchants reacted with anger." http://www.history.com/topics/american-revolution/tea-act
