You order 1.5 pounds of turkey at a deli. You will accept the turkey if its weight is between 1.54 lb and 1.46 lb. What absolute value inequality describes the tolerance of the weight of the turkey? Please help I am a bit confused, thank you

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

draw a number line and plot 1.5 on it |dw:1441251633221:dw| preferably in the center

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then add on 1.54 and 1.46 |dw:1441251655628:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how far is 1.54 from 1.5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.04

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1441251739315:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how about from 1.46 to 1.5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would it be |x-1.5|>=0.04

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

very close

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait |x-1.5|=<0.04???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the general form is |x - T| <= E T = target value E = error you want the absolute value of the difference, |x-T|, to be as small as possible. Ideally 0 The worst you're able to live with is E = 0.04 so yeah it should be |x-1.5| <= 0.04

Thank you saved my life :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
