Why are numbers used in chemistry often expressed in scientific notation?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

because they're often very large or very small. Like the radius of an atom is 70 pm, or \(70.0*10^{-9}m\) if we didnt express it in scientific notation it would be 0.0000000070 m which is hard to read and easy to make mistakes with.
