The table below shows the number of hours some business people in two states spend in meetings each week: State A 21 23 24 22 24 25 23 23 22 State B 24 22 20 23 23 50 20 46 21 Part A: Create a five-number summary and calculate the interquartile range for the two sets of data.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start by putting the numbers for each group in order

OpenStudy (anonymous):

21 22 22 23 23 23 24 24 25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

21 22 22 23 23 23 24 24 25 A 20 20 21 22 23 23 24 46 50 B Is what I mean, but good job.

These are the 5 numbers you're looking for in each group. minimum → lowest number 1st quartile → median of the lower half of numbers median → middle number 3rd quartile → median of the higher half of the numbers maximum → highest number Which ones do you know how to find?

@urbanmorgans

OpenStudy (anonymous):

both

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you pick out the maximum and minimum in group A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

21 22 22 23 and 23 24 24 25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right. Now pick out the median. What number is in the middle of group A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20 20 21 22 and 23 24 46 50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's 23.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now for the 1st quartile, look at the numbers left of the median. They are 21, 22, 22, and 23. We need to find their median. Since it's an even amount of numbers, there you can't just pick it out. We have to add the 2 middle numbers and divide by 2. 1st quartile = (22 + 22)/2 = 22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that make sense?
