in this case the area of a square with sides = 11

this is confusing. it does not mean the length of a side. It is just a
"reminder" (which means you have to memorize this) B is AREA of the the base

I am sure we can derive it with calculus, and maybe just geometrically
But I remember Archimedes found the volume of a cone was 1/3 the volume of the enclosing cylinder, and he was so proud of finding that, he had it engraved on his tombstone.
