how do you divide fractions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[explain with this equation \frac{ -2 }{ 3 }\div \frac{ -3 }{ 8 }\]

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Dividing fractions is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

\[\frac{ -2 }{ 3 } \div \frac{-3 }{ 8 } = \frac{ -2 }{ 3 } \times \frac{ 8 }{ -3 }\]

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

It's a lot easier to do it that way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would you multiply -2*8 and 3*-3 i completly forgot how to do it

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Yeperdoo.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Remember to simplify when applicable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would the solution be\[\frac{ 16 }{ 9 }\]

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Yep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tysm

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

And it is positive because since both the numerator and denominator are negative, they cancel out. A negative divided by a negative is a positive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i remebered that but ty

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would the same thing apply when on set of fractions is in brackets like this\[\frac{ -2 }{ 3}\div \left(\begin{matrix}-1 \\ 3\end{matrix}\right)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the second set is suppose to be a fraction
