He legalised Christianity by the Edict of Milan in 313. He became a Christian himself (although a novice only, being baptised on his death bed), and called and participated in the Council of Nicaea in 325. He favoured Christainity and people soon realised conversion was a way of enhancing careers. Also important is that he survived - his reign was longer than any since Augustus. He came at the right time - earlier, and he wouldn't have been able to make his changes stick, later, and his changes wouldn't have had time to take root before the barbarian invasions, which could have swept Christianity away.
