The mean of a set of data is sensitive to extreme scores.

In this data set, most of the data is in the 20s and 30s except for the 77.

It is on out there and is sometimes called an outlier.

The 77 could cause the mean to shift to the right to the extent that the mean would not be a good summary number to represent the data set.

Take a look yourself.

Crank out the mean with the 77 in the data set.

Then, take out the 77 and crank out the mean of the remaining numbers.

Compare the results.
