OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

WILL GIVE MEDAL!! what is the value of (picture in comment box)

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Negative exponents mean that you have to move the value to the numerator. Move the 2 and the x^-3 up, and you get 2x^3/y^5

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

^ means the next number is an exponent, btw. So 2x^3 is Two x cubed

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

and y^5 is y to the power of 5

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

sooo.....i dont get it. lol help walk me thorugh it

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Okay, so the original equation is 1/2^-2 x^-3 y^5

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

The numbers that have negative exponents are 2 and x

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

If there's a negative exponent in the denominator, you want to move it to the numerator, and change the exponent to positive

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

ok....what now?

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

So, if you move the 2^-2 to the top, you multiply it by the numerator, which is 1. You're left with 2. Pretty simple, 2 times 1

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Right now, the equation is 2/x^-3 y^5

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

but thats not one of the answers

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Now, you want to move the x^-3 up to the numerator. You do the same thing. Multiply the numerator by x^3, and you get 2x^3 / y^5 The y^5 stays on the bottom. That's fine.

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

the choices are: 16, -4, -1/32, or -16

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Um, none of those would work. You can't solve it with no equal sign. Was that the whole equation?

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

thoes are the choices for the answer to the problem

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

We don't have any information on what to plug in for x or y, so it can't be solved. Are you 100% sure that's all the information you've been given, that picture and the answer choices?

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

oh! i forgot x=2 and y=4

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

sorry i thought it was on the picture

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

@whovianchick

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

ok! I can help with that more now.

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

ok lol sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey girl come help me

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

So, let's plug them in. It's 2(2)^3 over (4)^5. The exponent for x is ONLY for x. Don't multiply x by two and then do the exponent, that's wrong. So, 2^3 is 8, times 2 is 16. 4^5 is 1024 (yes, big number, don't freak out.) You're left with 16/1024, or 1/64.

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

but thats not one of the choices. you mean 1/32?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@whovianchick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need help

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

i mean -1/32? @whovianchick

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

like i said the choices are the choices are: 16, -4, -1/32, or -16 @whovianchick

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Wait no that's wrong, I did something wrong. When you plug it in, you get -1/32

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

I think that's it. Sorry! That would've been helpful to have the values at first

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

Yeah

OpenStudy (cherokeegutierrez):

ok thank you for your help. @whovianchick

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

what do you want @number1gamer18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I NEED HELP

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

on what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what comes after

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

I can't find a question in the feed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

68

OpenStudy (whovianchick):

I'm not freaking stupid. Leave me alone

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no but i do need help
