Describe how the following stages occur in a neuron in terms of ion movement across the cell membrane: resting potential, threshold potential, depolarization, repolarization.

1. an electrochemical event (called an action potential) that uses cell energy and electrical charges to generate current 2. Slower than electricity through a wire but no resistance ie. nerve impulses are as strong at the end of the neuron as at the start 3. the neuron membrane is semi permeable to ions eg. Na+, K+, Cl- 4. an electrical potential difference occurs when ions become unequally distribued 5. when the neuron is at rest unstimulated, the inside has -ve charge versus the +ve outside ie. a potential difference of -70mV exists inside (called the resting membrane potential) 6. the axon is polarized (ie. a charged membrane caused by unequal distribution of +ve charges and by immobile -ve charged proteins trapped inside axon)
