Use the Distance Formula and the x-axis of the coordinate plane. Show why the distance between two points on a number line (the x-axis) is | a – b |, where a and b are the x-coordinates of the points.

is there a picture for this?

No. Sorry.

I'm just really confused.

Absolute value is used because the points might be negative. For example, the distance between points -8 and 15 would be 23. This is because absolute value -8 + absolute value 15 = 23. Do you understand now?
