OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

can someone explain this to me please :( Simplify this expression: 4p + 9 + (–7p) + 2 = ? A. 3p + 7 B. –3p + 11 C. 3p + 11 D. 11p + 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dang, Idk I got 4p+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whoops I forgot the p after the -7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3p+11 so the answer is B

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

oh my god thank you. but how did you get that? please tell me

OpenStudy (breanna1999):

Combine like terms

OpenStudy (breanna1999):

4p+(-7p)=-3p

OpenStudy (breanna1999):

9+2=11

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

@breanna1999 i don't get in.

OpenStudy (breanna1999):

You have terms in algebra. For example in this equation you have p and your number. You have to combine them(or add) together.

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

so add the numbers together that haves the same letter with it?

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

@breanna1999 so add the numbers together that haves the same letter with it?

OpenStudy (breanna1999):

Yes correct but pay attention to the negative numbers and make sure you add correctly

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

@breanna1999 okay, so how do you work with the negative number?

OpenStudy (breanna1999):

You have a positive 4p plus a negative 7p. You can rewrite this as 4p-7p. If you put this into a calculator you would get -3p or you could draw a number line and place a point on 4 and go backwards 7 spaces

OpenStudy (jakyfraze):

@breanna1999 ohh okay i think i got it :). thank you!!!

OpenStudy (breanna1999):

You are very welcome
