The settlers who founded Plymouth Colony in 1620 were English Separatists. They were not looking for a place with no ruler--they were still loyal subjects of the King (James I). However, they were opposed to the beliefs and practices, particularly the liturgy and ritual, that had accumulated within the Church of England.  So that could be a reason why they settled further north

im don't know how it effect the colonist expect in a way they knew what life was like outside the rule of England
