How do you best determine whether j/m2 and m*s2/N are equivalent units? Compare the written form of the units to see if they look the same. Notice that one unit contains joules and other newtons. Determine if the formula that each unit came from are the same. Express them both in terms of SI base units.

The best way is to break all secondary units into the primary (base) units. For example, N is a secondary unit which can be broken down into m kg s^-2, and so on. and joule is N-m, or to the base, m^2 kg s-2 So you can compare the base units to see if they are equivalent. For more examples, see: http://www2.cemr.wvu.edu/~wu/mae320/SI-unit.pdf

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

ok so then the correct answer would be the last statement right?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Sorry, what last statement ??

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

Express them both in terms of SI base units.

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

yup it was that one thank you for your help :)

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Base units include metre, second and kg. Both j and N can be expressed in terms of these three units (as shown above). If necessary, use the table in the link to check you results.

You're welcome! :)
