Basically there are two type of quantities we deal with in physics. The one is called as scalar and the other is vector. [There is one more quantity called as Tensors but you won't need that in 8th grade].

Scalars are those which does not have any direction associated to them and have only magnitude. For example, speed. We say that a body is moving with 10 miles per hour. We don't specify any direction with it. So it's a scalar quantity.

But, when we talk about velocity which is an example of vector quantity we say that the body is moving with 100 miles per hour in east direction or we do specify a direction alongwith the magnitude.
