OpenStudy (countryboy15):

help me solve some equation

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

1.x – 6 = 8 2.y + 5 = –12 3. -2c= –18

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Okay so giving you the answer wouldn't help. You need to know how to do it.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

i know thats why i asked help not tell

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Okay let me help.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

ty and whos the mod here

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

My computer crashed sorry. Okay so for each equation, to solve for x you want to get it by itself.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

To do that, you need to remove the numbers on the side of the equation x is at.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

ok

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

For the first one, how would you get -6 to equal 0?

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Any idea?

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

nope

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Okay so to get rid of negative numbers, you need to add a positive number to it.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

-6 + 6 = 0

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

After you add that to the side of the equation x is on, you have to add it to the other side.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

so it would be x=6

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

So, x-6 = 8 +6 +6

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

so x=2

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

No, 6+8

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

wait no i got it x=14 ok

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yep!

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Now try to do the second one.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

yeah so the same for the others????\

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Sorta.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

if you have a positive number that you need to get rid of, you need to subtract.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

would it be y=-7

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Close! If you are subtracting from a negative number, you need to add

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

or did i mis a step

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

So -12 - 5 = -17

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Do you understand?

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

ok so then y=-17

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yep!

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Now can you do the last one?

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

what about this fractoin thisng its 1/4 a=3

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

It is VERY different for the last one.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Annoying I know, but when you have 3x that means it is 3*x right?

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

can you help me with this one then ill do the last one 1/4 a=3

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

*=multiply

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

right

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

okay well to do that one, 1/4 * a = 3

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

We can do two things here.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

so it would be a=12

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

YES!

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Good job!

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

ok well thats easy

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

So what do you do for the last one?

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

If it is multiplication, use division

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

ok l3ets see

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Keep the c alone and focus on the 3

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

so would it be c=-36 jw

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Okay, so no. If we have multiplication, we need to use division to get rid of the 3

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

or 2

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

no wait it would be c=-9 right

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yep. Except remember that a negative/negative = positive

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

So it would be 9

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

so it would be c=9 then right

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yep!

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

and can you help with 2 or 3 more thats all

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

heres the first 6.5 = –3 + n

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Of course!

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

OKay so what do you think we would do first?

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

um lets see

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

-3 make it 3 maybe

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Add 3 to both sides to get rid of -3. :)

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

so would be n=9.5 right??

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yep!

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

ok ty now 2 more please

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

then theres this 2/3x=6

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

ok so what do you think we should do first. Hint: We will need to use multiplication and division for this one

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

sry crashed and um maybe divison

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Nope. IF we have a fraction beside the variable we need to get rid of the denominator.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

To cancel out division, you need to use multiplication.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

oh so how would it be like??

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

So, to get rid of 3 we need to multiply by 3 on both sides.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

would it be x=9

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yes!! Good job!

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

yes ty one more and again ty now i get it a lil more bc im home schooled and never get it thanks

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

I'm homeschooled as well, so I understand.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

x/4=12/6

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

thats awesome thanks for the help

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Okay so on this one I would simplify first.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

12/6 is...?

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

2??

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yeah lol.

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

I just realized that was probably a stupid question I apologize.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

so would be x=8

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Yep!

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

If you ever need anymore help, feel free to tag me if I am online.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

lol thanks wish i could give more then one medal

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

Algebra is one of my favorite subjects.

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

ok i will thanks

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

And here is a medal for getting those last ones on your own!

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

oh ty so much have a great one thanks

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

No problem! You too!

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

yeah would have mostliky asked someone to give lol

OpenStudy (sophiaholder):

lol

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

heres a word Q u think u could help

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

@sophiaholder

OpenStudy (countryboy15):

You need to make 18 cupcakes for a birthday party. You have already made 11. How many more cupcakes do you need to make? Write an equation and solve.
