Which equation has a narrower graph than y=4x^2? y =1/3x^2 y = 5x^2 y=1/7x^2 y=2x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my answer is y=5x^2

OpenStudy (triciaal):

why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the graph was narrower. but im not sure, just a bit confused

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Basically the large your scaling factor, `coefficients in front`, the larger your y-values will be. So the y-value when x=5,for instance, plotted on y=4x\(^2\) compared to y=5x\(^2\) will be `less` narrow. Another way to look at it, is if the scaling factor, or coefficient, gets `bigger`, then your function will approach \(+\infty\) a LOT laster in the \(+y\) direction

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

faster*

OpenStudy (triciaal):

the coefficient determines the "growth" factor so the higher the number the higher the y-value for that particular x..
