***Will Medal*** Mad cow disease is caused by a prion. A prion is a malformed protein that is found in the brain tissue of infected cows, and exposure can be fatal. Meat that comes in contact with infected tissue becomes contaminated with the prion. Currently, there are no treatments for prion diseases because prions are hard to target and are too similar to normal proteins. To prevent the disease, scientists would most likely recommend that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. people avoid eating meat entirely. b. new medicines be developed to prevent infection. c. people avoid travel in countries where the disease is common. d. meat handlers keep brain tissue from coming in contact with other meat.

i feel like the answer is a, but i am not sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To prevent it, not just avoid it. @ewikaending

OpenStudy (koikkara):

Hmm, Prion diseases of humans include classic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, @EwikaEnding yes, you are right. Also, by Identifying the existence and role of protein X, prion diseases can be prevented too.. \(\color{blue}{\huge\tt{Nice~}}\) \(\huge\mathcal{to~meet~}\) \(\color{red}{\huge\tt{You~!}}\)

I disagree and feel the answer D is the best. By ensuring the separation of brain and other consumed tissues, the prion is removed from the food supply, thus preventing the disease. Though I would also advocate avoiding meat from sources with known cases of mad cow.
