Mathematics 20 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

Suppose that a classmate asked you why (2x+1)2 is not (4x2+1). Write down your response to the student.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Did you mistake the placement of the 2 outside the parentheses in (2x+1)2 ?

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

If not, I assuming this is to test your knowledge of mathematics

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Well, (2x + 1)2 is saying 2 times (2x + 1) which is 4x + 2

OpenStudy (radar):

\[(2x + 1)^{2}\neq 4x ^{2}+1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to figure out how to say explain it in my discussion board.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

In order for it to be 4x^2, it would have to multiply the 2x by 2x, which is not the case

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Basically, you would say the classmate multiplied incorrectly.

OpenStudy (radar):

It would help if you used the "Equation" button.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Me?

OpenStudy (radar):

The poster, is using (2x +1)2 instead of (2x + 1)^2

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

hmmm, yeah, it looks weird. Just tried to answer the question to the best of my ability

OpenStudy (radar):

This creates confusion and chaos ...

OpenStudy (radar):

If the poster used the "Equation" feature it would be clear.
