Which of the following could be used to calculate the area of the sector in the circle shown above? π(10in)237 over 360 π(10in)37 over 360 π(37in)210 over 360 π(37in)10 over 360

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

None of these answer choices are correct. Is there something missing from one of them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh they are missing the ^2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

on which ones?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all of them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is (10in)^2 on all of them

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how is the ^2 written? over the 37?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is the area of the entire circle? use this formula A = pi*r^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

985.96?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if r = 10, then r^2 = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh wait my math was wrong. i didnt follow pemdas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

314 (putting pi as 3.14)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

don't replace pi with 3.14, leave pi as it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhhh ok hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

314.159..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no it would just be 100pi

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

think of pi as a variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now apparently, they didn't square the 10 to get 100 they left it as 10^2 so we'll have (10)^2*pi as part of the answer

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

or pi*(10)^2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`pi*(10)^2` is the area of the WHOLE circle we just want that pizza slice to get the area of that slice, we multiply by 37/360

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

\[\Large \pi*(10)^2\times\frac{37}{360} = \frac{\pi\times(10)^2\times37}{360}\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

example: say the angle is 90 degrees 90/360 = 1/4 so we take a quarter of the full area to get the slice area

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahh.. so the answer is b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nooo its a. the things were written wrong. i see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a) π(10in)^2 37 over 360 b) π(10in) 37 over 360 c) π(37in)^2 10 over 360 d) π(37in) 10 over 360

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ah I see now, thanks

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah it's definitely A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay thank you!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no problem
