I'm having trouble with a problem that involves velocity, charge, electric field, and electric force.
It was a really big day for the graduates of Starship Academy. Two of the cadets were commanding starships and a third starship was commanded by the venerable Captain Kirk, recently brought back from the dead using the recently re-discovered skill of black magic. All three vehicles were in stationary positions in a triangular array when the shaky voice of Scotty was heard over the intercom. “Captain, we have a big problem!” Scotty had noticed that all three vehicles had each been given a large charge Q by an unknown, but probably Klingon ship that was cloaked. “What does that mean?” asked Kirk. “We’ve been charged before”, he quickly added. “Well”, said Scotty, “Normally, that’s not a problem, but in 34.992 seconds, all three ships will suddenly lose all power and will be repelled by the other two ships. Because of our mutual repulsion, we will all be hurled to infinity again!” “pellet”, muttered Kirk, “I hate when that happens. I never liked infinity. When we get there, how fast will we be going?” Scotty’s answer shook Kirk to the core. “Well, we know our mass is M and with a mutual separation of D, the calculation should be an easy one. But I left my TI calculator back on Earth and the ship’s computer is fully occupied with a large movie download that I just started. I can’t answer you!” Help Scotty by providing the answer to Kirk’s question.
