Add the following polynomials, then place the answer in the proper location on the grid. Write the answer in descending powers of x. Find the sum of (5x^3 + 3x^2 - 5x + 4) and (8x^3 -5x^2 + 8x + 9).

Nnesha (nnesha):

sum = add so just add both functions \[\large\rm 5x^3 + 3x^2 - 5x + 4 +8x^3 -5x^2 + 8x + 9\] we are adding so we can remove parentheses now combine like terms

Nnesha (nnesha):

do you know what are like terms ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the bottom numbers right not the exponents?

Nnesha (nnesha):

ohh if the variables and exponent are the same then you can add their coefficient (just add/subtract coefficient )

Nnesha (nnesha):

here is an example 4x^2+ 5x^2 (variables and exponent are the same so we can combine them) (4+5)x^2 =9x^2

Nnesha (nnesha):

make sense ?? :=)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I got it. Thank you for your help

Nnesha (nnesha):

\[\large\rm \color{reD}{5x^3 }+ 3x^2 - 5x + 4 +\color{ReD}{8x^3} -5x^2 + 8x + 9\] like terms so you can combine their coefficients (5+8)x^3

Nnesha (nnesha):

okay alright descending means write from highest degree to lowest x^3,x^2,x :=)
