Which is the nearest in meaning to the word BUFFOON, as it is used in the passage above? A) swindler B) reaper C) buckaroo D) joker 3. The harm that resulted from his actions prompted him to REPENT A) turn himself in B) flee the scene

C) deny wrongdoing D) express regret

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1) Would be 'damnation' because Perdition is a Christian theory that it is an eternal punishment until after death. ' 2) Joker, 'buffoon' is a silly person -- in the passage it shows that he tells stories of no truth and speaks loud. 3) I am not sure, I would need to read whatever it is they asked you to read for you to get that question.

Thank you!(: Which excerpt from "The Prologue" of The Canterbury Tales best indicates that the Knight is a humble person? A) "Just home from service, he had joined our ranks/To do his pilgrimage..." B) "He had never yet a boorish thing had said/In all his life to any..." C) "Under assault, he had been there, and in/North Africa..." D) "For him against another heathen Turk;/He was of sovereign value..."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've not read the story, but because it asks what excerpt shows that the Knight is a humble person, I would most likely go with A). Because it wants to know which one indicates that he is an humble person, and D) is definitely not it as it says 'He was of sovereign' value and sovereign is a person of monarch. (Kings/Queens) and humble is low of importance (or someone that considers themself that) and C) really has no meaning to the question as it doesn't say anything about being humble while B) is perhaps it, but it's describing his life and not much if he's humble or not. So A) :)

((: What is the most likely reason that Chaucer presents The Cabterbury Tales as a first-hand account? A) to establish that he actually did observe the events he describes B) to create a sense of immediacy and authenticity C) to prove that the characters in the work had actually told him their stories D) to help the reader understand the mythology of the period

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've not read the Canterbury Tales before, but a first hand account consists of things such as diaries, autobiographies, and letters. So, I'm not 100% on this one, but I wolud say A or B. (Because I don't think the characters worked with him in the stories unless in the books it says otherwise (Like for example, he says they did and that they're not fictional characters) and it possibly could be D, but I've not heard of many first hand accounts of that specific era that describes the mythology of it's period.
