What rhetorical effect does the personification of the word Prudence have in the following excerpt from the Declaration of Independence? It ironically appeals to the religious sentiments of the audience. It sarcastically criticizes the colonists’ desire to form a new government. It directly emphasizes an appeal to the reader’s emotions. It effectively enhances the logos and ethos of the argument.

he Declaration of Independence uses the persuassive appeals of ethos, pathos and logos. It also uses the language analysis of diction (word choice), syntax (sentence structure), and images (figurative language, imagery, and the like). In the long first sentence of the declaration, the writers set their revolution in the context of human history ("the Course of human events"). In the first sentence of the second paragraph, the parallel structure and repetition of that enable the writers to enunciate with great clarity their fundamental beliefs. The personification of prudence emphasizes how reasonable the writers are. The negative diction about the actions of the British king and his subjects begins in this paragraph--and carries an emotional appeal.

The authority of Great Britain over this continent, is a form of government, which sooner or later must have an end: And a serious mind can draw no true pleasure by looking forward, under the painful and positive conviction that what he calls "the present constitution" is merely temporary. As parents, we can have no joy, knowing that this government is not sufficiently lasting to ensure any thing which we may bequeath to posterity. Charlie Wyatt bequeathed........ A)his living room with artworks B)his supporters to win the mayoral elections C)his collection of books to a local library D)his passion for soccer during his collage years . The posterity..........? A)of a gentleman prevents him from associating with common folks B)of any nation has the right to blame their predecessors for their suffering C)of any single person is not enough to grant him or her any authority over another person D)of any government can easily be damaged by false press and rumors .
