Asha found that a vertical line intersects the graph of x=|y| at two points. What can Asha conclude about x=|y|? It is a function of x but not a relation. It is a relation but not a function of x. It is both a function of x and a relation. It is neither a function of x nor a relation. Can someone help me figure this out?

x=|y| lol sorry...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The vertical line test is a way to check to see if a relation is a function or not http://www.coolmath.com/algebra/15-functions/03-vertical-line-test-02 if it is possible for a vertical line to cross the function at more than one point, then it is NOT a function

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

blank xy axis |dw:1444868667407:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

graph of x = |y| |dw:1444868679402:dw|

thanks!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

notice how it's possible to pass a vertical line through more than one point on the relation |dw:1444868731189:dw| so this is a relation, but not a function because it fails the vertical line test

thank you so much!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

btw, a relation is simply a collection of ordered pairs (ie points) if you plot all of the ordered pairs on the same xy axis coordinate system, then you get a graph (that sideways V shape shown)
