What is the y-intercept of the plane whose equation is 4x + 5y - z = 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please explain step-by-step in a simple way. My teacher did not go over this AT ALL so I'm lost. The book is not very informative on this chapter either. Possible answers: A) (0, 4, 0) B) (0, 0, 4) C) (5, 0, 0) D) (0, 5, 0)

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

to find the y-intercept, let x = 0 and z = 0, then solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol i just came here because I liked your profile pic Amanda xD

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

still there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need..a very deep explanation.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

look at your equation

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

4x + 5y - z = 20 substitute "0" for x, and "0" for z

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 5y - z = 20 Would that end up looking like 5y = 20 o.o

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

yes! now solve that for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = 4?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

yup! that means your intercept is (0,4,0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well that wasn't so bad. Thank you! :) I have a few other questions I need assisted on if you're interested, or I can open up a new question.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

I need to get going, tag someone if you need help

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

Directrix and welshfella are online now, they're really good helpers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thanks for your help :)
