Which word in the sentence is the indirect object? After the show, the performers made themselves a delicious dinner. A. themselves B. performers C. dinner D. show
I believe the answer here is "Themselves" because that is what the direct action "Dinner" is directed to, and even though "Performers" and "Themselves" are regarded as one, "Themselves comes after the verb "Made" which which is directed by the "Performers" toward "Themselves".
Thats what I thought too. Do you think you could help with a couple more?
Sure what do you have for me?
ok Which words in the sentence are the indirect objects? Before the hike, the ranger gave Luke and Marcus a map. Choose all answers that are correct. A. ranger B. Marcus C. Luke D. hike E. map
I think one of them is ranger.
i would say B. or D.
This is quite similar to the last one, I would have to say Luke and Marcus, because even though ranger is a noun, it comes before the verb, and in this case is directing the course of action, the ranger is giving the map to Luke and Mark, so I now for certain that map is the direct object, that is directed by the ranger toward Luke and Mark.
Ohhh.
Which word in the sentence is the indirect object? Did you tell him about the mysterious noise? A. noise B. you C. him D. tell (I think its noise.)
Hehe i'm not so great at this.
So in short, every time you see indirect and direct actions ask yourself, who is the person directing the actions and who is the the recipient of the course of action, the recipient of the course of action is your indirect action and the what the course of action is made with is the direct action. it will help a lot in questions like these, for example "John played a guitar for her" John in this case is directing the action so he is ignored in finding the direct and indirect objects. John played a guitar "direct object", for whom? For her, "direct object.
Ok that makes sense!
Try doing this one on your own, I will check your answer.
Ok sense you explained kind of what it is I think it is you because you're directing the action.
Or its him because hes the recipient right? I'm still confused.
Correct! that is what I have been trying to say, look for the targets or objects of the sentence, then separate them into direct or indirect objects.

Can you explain how indirect objects work again please?
Sure, alright, you now know that a direct object is subject to a verb, in this case an indirect object is subject to the direct object... (ps. the indirect object is usually a character)
Ok
So by now you should know that the verb here is "give", "map" is the direct object, so the indirect object would be?
So the indirect object is Tony in this case.
Correct! Here is a quick tip about indirect objects, usually indirect objects are simply actions carried out by someone to someone else, in this case Kevin is giving the map TO Tony.
This usually results in the indirect object being a character.
