OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

A bicycle and rider travel along a road. Which of the following statements is true? Only the bicycle undergoes a translation. Neither the bicycle nor the rider undergoes a translation. Only the bicycle rider undergoes a translation. The bicycle wheels rotate and translate the entire bike and the rider.

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

is it D?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

@Directrix

Directrix (directrix):

I have been trying to read up on translation. How is it defined?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

moving in a straight line just like Newton's apple

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

lol alright thank you :)

Directrix (directrix):

>moving in a straight line just like Newton's apple Vague definition.

Directrix (directrix):

I am now thinking this: Only the bicycle rider undergoes a translation.

Directrix (directrix):

You need a Physics person here.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

After looking at the information here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Translation_%28geometry%29#Translations_in_physics I am inclined to think that only the bicycle rider undergoes a translation, the reason being that the rotation of the bicycle wheels entails rotational displacements.

Note: At the link, look at the section headed "Translations in physics".
