why did people in the north and south have different opinions on slavery?

Is this for a test or for worksheet? You can use your own opinion..

The south did not want to eliminate slavery. They believed blacks were inferior to whites and weren't smart enough to do anything but work. Most blacks could not read/write because they had been forced on a ship and brought to America, so they were thought to be useless. The North believed the opposite, that African Americans were equal to everyone else. They had let their slaves free in the early 1800s. Slavery was the south's main source of labor, it helped their economy especially because of the high cotton produce. The North didn't need the slaves as much, perhaps because they had the most factories and could hire children and pay them little.

The south wanted to keep their slaves because they had more farming to do at the time (mainly cotton) so they needed their slaves to plant and farm all of their cotton. The north didn't have close to the amount of slaves (if any) the same as the south, plus they didn't grow crops, so no slaves were needed for farm work. (Hopefully this helped, and I can't see the answers completely on mobile so sorry if someone answered already)
