Company A charges $90 and allows unlimited mileage. Company B has an initial fee of $55 and charges an additional $0.70 for every mile driven. For what mileages will Company A charge less than Company B? Use m for the number of miles driven, and solve your inequality for m. ((show me how you got the inequality and I can solve it from there))

@RCCB

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anything? :3

OpenStudy (rccb):

maybe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whatcha got?

OpenStudy (rccb):

well just add .70 to 50 for every mile and when that price goes above 90 then you have your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

70 to 50? but the first price for b at least is 55 not 50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*0.70

OpenStudy (rccb):

or wait 55 your right sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problemo! now what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohmahgawd ima dumbbyyy you would make the equation of 90m=55+0.70m right? then work it out first then make your inequality

OpenStudy (rccb):

yeah that sounds about right,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

50=m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait its saying charge less hmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that make a difference?

OpenStudy (rccb):

one second

OpenStudy (rccb):

ok so you want company b to cost more than company a, you have to find out how many miles it will take to have to pay more at company b,

OpenStudy (rccb):

so you keep adding .70 to 55 until it is over 90, and for every time you add .70 that counts as one mile, so if you add .70 5 times, thats 5 miles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would that be 90<55+70(5)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then would you solve it?

OpenStudy (rccb):

5 was just an example thats not a number that gets used

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oooo, but if its more the 90 then wouldn't it be right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait, so would the inequality be 90<55+0.70(m) yeah?

OpenStudy (rccb):

add .70 so many times to 55, and keep adding .70 until the total number is above 90

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wat

OpenStudy (rccb):

you have 55 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (rccb):

ok and you have to add .70 to it

OpenStudy (rccb):

so you get 55.70

OpenStudy (rccb):

and you would add another .70

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh oh ohh! i getchu now ok

OpenStudy (rccb):

56.40

OpenStudy (rccb):

and you keep doing that until you get that number above 90, does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah I get it thanks!

OpenStudy (rccb):

haha no problem, but remeber how many times you add .70, then you take that number and that is how many miles driven

OpenStudy (rccb):

that is the millage that company a charges less than company b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha awesome thanks ! :)

OpenStudy (rccb):

haha no problem :) so you get it?
