what does a mitochondria do?
I believe you should of posted this question in the Biology section or at least the math section. But anywho, i'll still answer it for you(: Mitochondria are the energy factories of the cells. The energy currency for the work that animals must do is the energy-rich molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The ATP is produced in the mitochondria using energy stored in food. Mitochondria is the organelle that converts chemical energy, stored in food, into a compound that can be used by the cell. The mitochondria breaks down food and turns it into energy for the cell to use. Inside the mitochondria energy is stored and food is converted for use in a cell. The number of mitochondria in the cell can depend on the purpose of the cell. They are the "power plants" of cells. They produce energy. In multicellular organisms the mitochondria plays an important role in apoptosis (death). They break down sugars to make energy. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, without them cells would not have the energy availalbe for the processes of life. By analogy they would be the furnace comaparment (where the fire burns) of a steam train. The mitocondria is an organelle that is stored in your cells where glucose energy is transformed into ATP.
