The Protestant leader John Calvin was born on July 10, 1509, in Noyon, France. Calvin was a dominant figure of the Reformation, a religious movement that began within the Roman Catholic Church and led to the development of Protestantism . Calvin was a brilliant thinker, powerful preacher, productive writer, and skilled organizer. He helped establish the Reformed, or Presbyterian, tradition within Protestantism in Switzerland, France, and other European countries. His ideas also were influential in colonial North America. In France, Calvin’s followers were called Huguenots. In England, Calvin strongly influenced reformers known as Puritans. In America, Puritan groups founded settlements in Virginia and along the New England coast. Such groups included the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony.
