OpenStudy (sushi121212):

Roads are sometimes salted to melt ice. What does this salting do to the plants along the roadside and why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The salt makes the environment hypertonic for the roadside plants. More water diffuses out of the root cells into the surroundings than the amount diffusing in. This can be fatal for the roots and the whole plant. This salting dehydrates the plants because the higher salt concentration causes the water to diffuse out of the plant to even up the concentration.
