The coronation of Charlemagne as Roman emperor by pope Leo iii in St. Peter's basilica, on Christmas Day, 800 is one most widely remembered and variously interpreted political events of the Middle Ages. Evaluate the long term legacy of this event. What did the event represent or symbolize for Charlemagne and his contemporaries? How was the coronation used or interpreted in subsequent centuries by both emperors and popes, who wished to lay claim to the event as a precedent for legitimizing papal power or imperial power, respectively ?

I think it basically meant that the Church was supreme or something similar, since it's basically showing that the ruler of the Roman Empire had to be made ruler by the ruler of the Church.
