In the first one, you know the origin will always be (0,0), so that's one of your vertices

If the length had been a number like 3 instead of "a", you know the point on the bottom right would be (3,0), because it didn't move on the y-axis, but moved over 3 points. The top left vertex would be (0,3), because it didn't move on the x-axis but went up 3 on the y.
