The core of Buddhism is non-theistic. Buddhist philosophy comes out of Hindu philosophy which contains deities, but Buddhists are not concerned with deities, whether they exist or not. It's a matter of enlightenment that they seek, not connection with deity or worship. There may be some sects that do believe and even honor deity and certainly there are sects that honor figures called bodhisattva or "being of wisdom", which I will describe as something akin to angels in Christinanity... they are beings who have reached enlightenment, died and now use their immense compassion to aid others in reaching that same goal. The Buddha is honored as an ideal to strive for, an example to live by, an honored elder, not necessarily a deity. The Buddha was a great teacher who discovered powerful truths and discovered the eightfold path to enlightenment (which is escape from suffering and escape from the cycle of constant reincarnation and rebirth to reach "nirvana" or non-existence/perfection). He is not seen as a deity, rather as a teacher and a being that can help you reach enlightenment... but the heavy lifting must be done on your own. I typically class Buddhism as an atheistic or agnostic religion... though many point out that it is more of a philosophy then a religion. Here are some of the basic teachings of Buddhism: The four noble truths of Buddhism- 1. Life means suffering. 2. The origin of suffering is attachment. 3. The cessation of suffering is attainable. 4. The path to the cessation of suffering (is the eightfold path to enlightenment
