Scenario: Rachel can make 3 bracelets in an hour. Oliver can make only 2 bracelets in an hour, but he already has 5 completed bracelets. Use system of equations to determine when she will have the same number of bracelets as Oliver. I got the following equations: y = 3x (Rachel’s equation) y = 2x + 5 (Oliver’s equation) What does y represent in the above equations? And using the scenario, how did I get these equations? Thanks!

OpenStudy (gabebae):

Make a table for both equations

I just need help with what y-represents. I already know what x represents ( the number of hours that have passed).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for replying!

OpenStudy (gabebae):

x represents the hours it took to complete the bracelets and y represents how many bracelets were finished

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!!!

OpenStudy (gabebae):

you're welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wouldn't the 3 in 3x be the number of bracelets finished?

OpenStudy (gabebae):

Well, every hour she makes 3 bracelets

OpenStudy (gabebae):

If she made bracelets for two hours then she would have 6 bracelets in total

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So y equals the number of bracelets made per hour?

OpenStudy (gabebae):

yes the x is the input and the y is the output Example for the first equation: y=3x 9=3(3) She took 3 hours making 9 bracelets If you want to graph her progress then the points would be (3, 9)

Wow thanks for the awesome explanation and clarification!!! Thanks again!!!

Hope I helped
