u know pythogoras theorem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We were learning them but i don't know them well

OpenStudy (baru):

do you know what a right angled triangle is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (baru):

do you know what a hypotenuse is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I heard it by my teacher but i'm not sure how to use it

OpenStudy (baru):

|dw:1446368663214:dw|

OpenStudy (baru):

the side opposite to the 90 degree angle is called the hypotenuse

OpenStudy (baru):

in ur picture, the diagonal and the two sides form a triangle. can u recognize which side is the hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yess

OpenStudy (baru):

so which one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My teacher said that it can be either sides

OpenStudy (baru):

|dw:1446369088048:dw|

OpenStudy (baru):

there is only one side opposite to the right angle

OpenStudy (baru):

can u recognize which one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Generally in a right angled triangle, the hypotenuse is the longest side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh @FitzIncorporated right

OpenStudy (baru):

so can u recognize which side in my figure is the hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you? :D It's the longest one, and the one opposite the right angle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't do it for you, I don't get paid - but it's not hard. This is the easiest part of the question. Do you have a calculator that can figure out square roots?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ummmmm i'm confused a bit but is it the side with the little square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the angle with the square is a right angle. And the hypotenuse is opposite the right angle. If you can't tell the longest side, you can draw a little line, like this:|dw:1446369983558:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The hypotenuse *won't ever* be touching the little square.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, that's a good way of looking at it - the hypotenuse is the ONE SIDE that ISN'T touching the right angle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the question isn't just asking you to find out the hypotenuse, it's asking you to find how long the side with the 'X' on is. For that, you use the pythagorean theorem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the square of the hypotenuse is the same as the squares of the other two.
