As America expanded economically, it experienced growing pains. The Industrial Revolution brought exploitation of the workers. Factories grew rapidly, and the demand for labor rose each year. Along with the expansion of the railroads came a need for laborers to lay track and do ongoing repairs. The steel and mining industries, also dangerous and demanding for workers, also expanded greatly during this period. While this explosion of industry enabled unprecedented growth of the national economy, workers who provided the labor for these endeavors often found themselves working long hours under unsafe conditions.
Unskilled factory workers put in long days, often for very little pay in what came to be known as sweat shops. Tradesmen were held in higher esteem by employers, and while their working conditions were in no way ideal, they did have somewhat more power to bargain for wages and working conditions. Children were perhaps the most exploited segment of the working population. With few or no laws to govern the employment of children, corporations and factory owners took advantage of the cheap labor, having them work long days in the factories, for almost no pay. Mine workers were particularly susceptible to working in unsafe conditions, and severe injury and death were constant threats to laborers in these industries.
