Judicial review is where a higher level court can review cases involving laws and render those laws invalid if they are in conflict with other higher forms of law, such as the Constitution. It is an important part of the checks and balances to limit the authority of the legislative branch. This occured as a result of Marbury v. Madison in 1803. Which made the Supreme Court a separate branch of government on par with Congress and the executive.
