In 1800, Napoleon led his reserve army across the Alps into Italy to fight Austrian forces that had laid siege to Genoa. Although Genoa had fallen by the time Napoleon had reached it, the crossing led to a series of important military victories for Napoleon.

Review the two paintings of Napoleon. David chooses to include a broader view of the mountains and the sky than Delaroche does. What is the main effect of these different choices on the paintings?

Wouldn't the greater distance (less broad view) portrayed in Delaroche's painting make him seem closer to victory because it shows he has traveled a greater distance?

Delaroche's mountains have a lighter shade color in the back than David's, but Delaroche's painting is supposed to portray a weary depiction of Napoleon.

The difference(s) I notice between the two paintings are that the mood of David's painting has more of a victory feel, a triumph, showing the mountains they've conquered in the background. Delaroche's painting has a disheartened mood to it. Kind of like the journey is never ending, and they're cold. There are less mountains in the picture because it adds to the effect that they feel there's so much more progress to be made.
