you notice how you have a "bar" on each side of the x-4?

When you have bars like that, you know that it takes the absolute value of whatever happens inside - whether the number inside becomes a negative or positive (after you plug in a value for x) you will always take the absolute value (positive) of that number. Think of an absolute value as the distance of some number on a number line, away from zero - disregarding it's direction (it will never be positive, since "distance w/o direction" can only be a positive number...get it?
