OpenStudy (celinegirl):

This is french.. please please help. Explain how the adjective spellings are similar or different and why - Ma mere est sympa. Elle est polie et belle (sympa, polie, and belle are underlined) - Mon pere est sympa et poli ussi mais il n'est pas tres beau! (sympa, poli, and beau are underlined)

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

They are different because they are either feminine or masculine. So like for example let me just drop some stuff for you..

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

|dw:1446651722001:dw|

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

Okay thank you.. i want to make sure i get this right (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm very sorry I don't know French

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

Yeah no problem. If you need any more help w/ French just lemme know :P I'll do what I can.

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

so that would just be the answer because they are feminine and masculine?

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

Yes. because they are feminine and masculine, the spelling of the adjectives will be different (that doesn't mean they can't be the same though).

OpenStudy (gabebae):

I'm currently taking a french session right now

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

@GabeBae I already finished French. xD

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

I have another question

OpenStudy (gabebae):

FLVS?

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

no

OpenStudy (gabebae):

oh

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

what is intonation? how does this make asking questions easy in french? use an example

OpenStudy (mrnood):

OK - yo uneed to be clear about a point.. it is NOT the adjective that is masculine or feminine it is the NOUN mere is feminine (MA mere) pere is masculine (MON pere) the adjective 'agrees' with the noun so poli is the form for masculine NOUNS and polie for feminine

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

Okay so here's an example. You know when you ask a question and your voice gets higher towards the end of a question so that you know someone's asking something? That's basically what intonation is.

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

@xMissAlyCatx thanks.. do you think i need to put an example question with it since it ask for an example or no?

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

So an example is Puis-je avoir de l'eau, s'il vous plaît ? which means "may I have some water, please?" At the end when you say plait, your voice rises in the pitch.

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

@xMissAlyCatx ah(: i get it.. thanks

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

can you help with the last one?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

@xMissAlyCatx that is not a good example. The question in THAT sentence is formed by the fact that you said puis-je instead of je puis

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

@MrNood would comment allez vous? be a good example?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

No - the question is formed by 'comment' meaning 'how'

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

@MrNood Then what is a good, easy example?

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

Here is the last question that I need help with.... The verb etre is used to say who different people are. If I am describing myself as intelligent, how would I then talk about my friends and me being intelligent? be sure to explain how you use the verb etre and how intelligent must be spelled in both situations

OpenStudy (mrnood):

if you are talking about a group including yourself you use 'we' in English what is the French equivalent of 'we are (intelligent)'?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

we is plural and as above - the adjective need to agree with the pronoun since the group is of unknown gender it is taken as masculine and plural so the spelling of 'intelligent' as an adjective has to match the 'masculine plural' pronoun

OpenStudy (mrnood):

the intonation example if your friend di well on her test you might say "you got 90%" if you say it with no rising intonation then it is a statement - you are telling her the score but - if you raise your pitch at th eend , then it becomes a question. It is th esame in French

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

@MrNood oh okay

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

@MrNood so what would it be?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

Well - I have explained all the reasons for making the adjective agree so the key part about learning is that oyu do some. The verb 'etre' is the most common verb you will need so find out the full conjugation je suis tu es il/elle est nous ?? vous ?? ils ?? then find out haow to make 'intelligent' agree with masculine plural....

OpenStudy (celinegirl):

@MrNood what would "you got a 90%?" be in french then?

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

Vous avez un 90%.
