I need help finding out which of these sentences has a grammatical error. I'll medal. Thanks. The county plans to take part in the annual International Coastal Cleanup this coming Saturday. Volunteers should bring their own hats, gloves, sunscreen, and bottled drinking water. The county will provide bins for recycling plastic, aluminum cans, and glass bottles. It is expected that nearly 8,000 pounds of trash were collected from the 13 beach cleanup locations.

either A or D
I think it's A, i'm not sure.
D
We think of a sum of money, a period of time, a distance etc. as one thing. So we use a singular verb: • Twenty thousand pounds (= it) was stolen in the robbery, (not 'were stolen') • Three years (=it) is a long time to be without a job. (not 'Three years are...) • Six miles is a long way to walk every day Wrong: "Five thousand dollars were awarded to the plaintiff." Right: "Five thousand dollars was awarded to the plaintiff." Consider such amounts as lump sums rather than individual dollars (pounds, hours, etc.). http://www.law.cuny.edu/legal-writing/students/grammar/subject-verb-agreement.html Pounds takes a singular verb.
It is expected that nearly 8,000 pounds of trash were collected from the 13 beach cleanup locations. pounds was @dranz10
It is expected (future) were collected (past) seems like "will be" would make more sense, but "was" may work.
