Missouri COmpromise- Missouri petitioned to become a state and join the union as a slave state. At the time there were 11 free states and 11 slave states so the county was balanced but now since Missouri wanted to come in that would make it uneven, therefore the Norhterners were angry that it wanted to become a slave state and didnt want it to happen. So basically what the compromise did was add missouri as a slave state but then to make it even they made Maine a state as well and added it as a free state. (this compromise was engineered by Henry Clay).............no division of the state the entire thing was a slave state. where your probably getting confused is that Missouri was a slave state and as a balance of power Maine became a free state. Also it had nothing to do with slaves in the state wanting to be free. It all had to do with balance of free states and slave states Nullification Crisis- In 1828 congress passed a bill authorizing new tariffs on imported manufactuing cloth and iron. the cost rose alot so the legislature of South Carolina looked again at the doctrine of nullification. this states that individual states could rule on the constitutionality of federal laws. Jackson didnt like nullification but his vice president John Calhoun supported it, thus leading to some obvious problmes right there. South Carolina eventually called a convention to vote to nullify the law imposing tariffs. As a response Jackson sent troops to collect tariffs. As a result to this John Calhoun resigned. ......i think when you mean go to war it probably means that he sent troops to collect taxes. there was no actual war. yes jackson did believe in states rights but he opposed the idea of nullification Antebellum America- the time period leading up to the civil war. from about 1820-1860. there were alot of tension during this time, mostly due to slavery opinions. So basicaly this is all connected. Missouri Compromise and the Nullification Crisis happened during the Antebellum time period. (Antebellum in a time period). The Missouri Compromise and Nullification Crisis were both things that showed that america was having trouble agreeing on things. the south believed one thing and the rest of the US believed anohter. It represents how the nation was starting to split and how eventually all these tensions would start rising to the surface and develope into the civil war. I hope i explained it well enough and that it helped :) good luck!
