Algebra 1 - Simplifying Expressions (will award and fan asap)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4ab + 7ba - 5 -3ba + 9 -2ab

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

do you know how to combine like terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. So I do that first? But ab and ba aren't like terms, right?

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

i'm not 100% sure but i think the teacher put that to confuse you bc multiplication is multiplication no matter the order

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh.. well I kinda gotta know for sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@satellite73

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

like hysusonic is saying, ab = ba since you can multiply two numbers in any order

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so -3ba is the same as -3ab

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok! Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So can you draw out the steps so I can see how you simplify it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm a visual learner

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

7ba would be equal to ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh? what are you asking? 7ab?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes 7ab

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so `4ab + 7ba - 5 -3ba + 9 -2ab` is the same as `4ab + 7ab - 5 -3ab + 9 -2ab`

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg thats so helpful

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1446948872061:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in total 6ab?
