Please help Me!!!!! Divide the following polynomial, then place the answer in the proper location on the grid. Write your answer in order of descending powers of y. (y 3 - 4y 2 + 7y - 6) (y - 2)

OpenStudy (alekos):

are you familiar with polynomial division?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

no

OpenStudy (alekos):

well then we'll have to start from the beginning

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok i need all the help i can get

OpenStudy (alekos):

|dw:1447079644092:dw|

OpenStudy (alekos):

what is y^3/y ?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

im not really sure

OpenStudy (alekos):

y^3 divided by y = y^2 OK?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

so whats the next step @alekos

OpenStudy (alekos):

so now we have the following

OpenStudy (alekos):

|dw:1447080135476:dw|

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok

OpenStudy (alekos):

so now we have y^2 on the top above the y^3 now what is y^2(y-2)

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

would that be mutiplication?

OpenStudy (alekos):

yep

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

so so would lthat be 2*-2?

OpenStudy (alekos):

no its y^2(y-2) = y(y^2) - 2(y^2) so what does that come out to?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

2y^2

OpenStudy (alekos):

no its y^3 - 2y^2 OK?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok

OpenStudy (alekos):

so now we have |dw:1447080563908:dw|

OpenStudy (alekos):

we place this result underneath the original polynomial starting from the first term. Now we subtract the first 2 terms from each other i.e. y^3 - 4y^2 - (y^3 -2y^2) ?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok

OpenStudy (alekos):

your turn

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

y-2y

OpenStudy (alekos):

no its -2y^2, can you see that?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

not really im confused on this part

OpenStudy (alekos):

(y^3 - 4y^2) - (y^3 - 2y^2) = (y^3 - y^3) - 4y^2 + 2y^2 = -2y^2

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

oh ok i see now

OpenStudy (alekos):

OK, next step

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok

OpenStudy (alekos):

|dw:1447081514034:dw|

OpenStudy (alekos):

Just like a normal long division. you see?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

yeah

OpenStudy (alekos):

Now we divide -2y^2 by the y from the (y-2) divisor what do we get?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

im not sure

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

im completely lost on this

OpenStudy (alekos):

_2y^2/y = ?

OpenStudy (alekos):

yeah you can do it

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

wouldnt that just be y^2

OpenStudy (alekos):

no try again -2y^2 divided by y = ?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

i dont know

OpenStudy (alekos):

if you're struggling with this, then polynomial long division will be like climbing a mountain! lets start with this \[\frac{ y^{2} }{ y } = y\]

OpenStudy (alekos):

so what is \[\frac{ -2y ^{2}{} }{ y } = ?\]

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

-y^2

OpenStudy (alekos):

we're not getting anywhere unfortunately. You need some serious help with algebra. I would love to help you further but we need to get the algebra sorted first. I suppose your in the US, is that right?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

yup and yeah i know i suck at algebra

OpenStudy (alekos):

you need to get the algebra sorted first before you can even hope to solve polynomial long division problems. Do you have a local tutor? I would love to help you out but I'm in the middle east and I tutor high school students every week. I don't know, maybe we can do a skype tutoring session or something?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

i dont have skype

OpenStudy (alekos):

I take it you have a PC so does it have a microphone/speaker and/or camera?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

no i dont have a laptop just a desk top

OpenStudy (alekos):

OK, I see. That makes it a little difficult. Maybe I can send you some algebra problems then via email with a little theory and some examples?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok thanks
