Lab Project 2: Do-It-Yourself Design Project

There has never been a better time to find easy do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, thanks to the explosion in interior design shows and websites. For this lab, you will create an interior design project for a “client”...yourself! It is up to you to choose what kind of project you will create. You can use any materials that you have around the house. Document every step of your project by following the list below:

Determine what you want to make. Search for ideas on the internet. Look for:

low-budget makeovers
For more ideas, you can also try the local library or craftshop.

Create a list of three possible projects that you might work on. Consider the pros and cons of the different options and make a list of each.
Be sure to think about scale when you are calculating your project. For example, let’s say you are going to create a lamp out of repurposed household objects. You need to have an idea if it will go on a small bedside table or a bigger piece of furniture. Are you going to create some kind of wall hanging? If so, figure out what size it should be before you start.

Choose one project and copy the directions onto your document. Be sure to include an image similar to what you want to make.

Determine a budget for your project and add it to your document.

Measure where you intend to put your finished project and write down the dimensions.
This will help you to determine if your project is the right size for the space. For example, let's say the wall you want to hang your project upon is 8 feet by 10 feet. In addition, there are two 2-by-3 feet windows. You will need to think about how much room you have to place your piece.

Explain why you took the measurements you did and how you determined them. How does your project meet the requirements of the space? Be sure to detail the equations that you used to arrive at your conclusions.
Once you have chosen your project, your budget is the next concern. Your budget will depend on how much you have to spend. It will also depend on how much you can use available household items. Remember, thrift stores can be great places to find furniture or household items that can be repurposed or turned into a completely different object.
Create an itemized list of the supplies you will need to create your project and add it to your document. Add this official “bid” for the budget to the bottom of your list. This will be the amount of money you allow yourself to spend. If you go over this amount, you will have to justify it to your “client.”

Collect the materials, take a picture of your supplies and add it to your document.

Once you have bought the materials, record the actual cost. Write down where you were over and/or under budget. Briefly explain these differences.

Finally, it is time to get to work on your project. Complete the steps as described in the directions, take a picture of the final item and add it to your document.
