Help!! Please Use absolute value to express the distance between −12 and −15 on the number line. A). |−12 − (−15)| = −27 B). |−12 − (−15)| = −3 C). |−12 − (−15)| = 3 D). |−12 − (−15)| = 27

Help Anyone Please? :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Absolute Value, huh?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

subtract -15 from -12 and take the absolute value of the result

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the absolute value is always positive eg |-5| = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that subtracting negative numbers from negative numbers would actually have an inverse effect and bring the number closer to zero rather than away from it.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

can you calculate -12 - (-15)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its -3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, you are off by about 6. :/

OpenStudy (welshfella):

-12 - (-15) = -12 + 15

OpenStudy (welshfella):

recall - * - = +

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-12 - (-15) is a double negative. Imagine taking the two negative signs, making one vertical and have one on top the other. It's actually -12 +15 now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's just 12+15 bc the absolute value of a number switches, it's sign. as in if it is positive it will become negative, and the other way around.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh my gosh it is not hard what is 15 - 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its c

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it agrivates me when people try to over explain things

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know i was soooooo Lost i understood it and then i lost it and then i got it again and then i was totally off

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, but it goes against the code of conduct to just give the answer out. Plus I'm used to mental math so I'm not very good at explaining my solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

their trying to explain how everything works when in realityall you have to do is count and I did not give the aNSWER i JUST REWROTE THE PROBLEM

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry stupic caps lock

OpenStudy (welshfella):

@kayleeMullins - are you happy with working out problems using negatives? If not I can help you further

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well I have a question and I need help with it I'm about to bumb it up

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Misty will answer that for you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and Thanks @welshfella :)
